your cars

Post by mike-b »

Hi everyone, Name here is mike. I have a Granada Mk2 ghia V8
Engine is a moderate Rover 3.9 with the BW 35 auto at the back.
Engine is no big deal but it works for me and does more mpg that the Ford 2.8 V6 I sent to the scrapyard.
Only other mods are probably standard, goodridge brake hoses, front disks changed to Bremsport grooved & ventilated. Rear disk conversion.
No need of suspension change due to lighter engine & box.
Mod in pipeline is a change to manual box, a new Tremec T5 with hydraulic clutch - Granada Mk2 used a cable, typical of Euro Ford.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the Welcome. Two of you so far.
So car porn is needed, I assume this is pictures of my car?
Big problem with pics, I have to learn how to do it first?
I only joined 25 march 10, but I promise car pics.
Now then, your view on the Tremec T5 3550 `box? I am told "Bullet Proof" and behind my simple RV8 3.9 it should last forever. I only have 240 horses, decent cam, and weber 500 with edelbrock performer and range rover disy electronic. Sorry but no "Points" of any make.
New T5 is big bucks I know, reliability is paramount, cost = quality means plenty cash assuming it is quality.
Your views please Gents.
Thanks again. mike

Mike
Assumed correctly.
Car porn lots of it.
IMO Tremec T5 good to the ends of the earth and beyond with your set up.
All you need now is to avoid Perry because he WILL try to lead you to the dark side which in Forum terms is Nitrous.

Not that anyone else will try to lead you there either.

cheers
Paul

Brian,

Welcome to the forum.

Not all T5 boxes are the same and the later world class boxes are better than the earlier versions.

The gear lever position is also different on Ford and GM versions so you will need to measure your intended gear lever position before making a decision.

Here is a site with detailed info on all the various T5's you will also get excellent advice re the hydraulic conversion but from what I here it is better to avoid the internal throw out bearing/slave unit and try and use a more conventional slave cylinder.

http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Borg- ... D-Tags.htm

Bell housings are available from V8 Tuner and Real Steel but not cheap.

Unless you are going to put the gearbox under a lot of stress, 240 BHP is not a problem, you could use either a rebuilt late version of the LT77 Rover box or a Rover R380 box which is a development of the LT77.

The LT77 bellhousing will work with either of these boxes and this would be a lot cheaper and simpler than the T5 option.

Hi again all, Thankyou gentlemen, Re T5 Will be brand new, sorry but LT77 and its mate are not going in my car, I have had some bad reports of them. Good reports come thick and fast for the T5, however you guys are the ones that really know, hence the question, thanks for that.

Nitro eh !!!! Keep Perry away from me please !!!!! My main reason for a change of engine was ( and still is ) economy ..... well to a point anyway.
Hey I enjoy thrashing the boy racers in their 4-pot shopping trolleys.
Research came in with a Rover V8 for three reasons, small block, lighter engine ( old was 2.8 ford V6 and weighed as much as a skyscraper ) and due to the now overall weight of the car more mpg. It works for me and yes I admit a T5 is expensive and perhaps "over the top" however, reliability is always at the forefront.
Thanks for the tip about the internal clutch, I will take on your advice and go the "normal" way. Now I am stuck.
A T5 bell I feel is a must have, no plates behind the slush bell.
Gear stick position not a problem, plenty of space inside front to back.
Now I MUST get those pics up. Many thanks guys. mike :D

Mike,

Sorry for wrong name last time.

V8 Tuner does the T5 gearbox, bellhousing, Yoke and hydraulics
http://v8tuner.co.uk/category.php?id=22

All adds up to a lot of money unless you have a cheaper source,
If so do let us know for the benefit of the forum members

Check the ratios carefully a lot seem come with the very high 5th gear at 0.63/1 which will be purely cruise.

Late type LT77 & R380 will happily handle the power of your engine and if in good condition should perform well, you pays your money and make your choice.

Hi all, Thanks for that one Kevin, I will certainly inform you all about where all the parts came from and the costs involved. I can tell you there will not be one sole supplier, already I have found a vast difference in prices.
The `box alone - brand new - I am looking at £200 plus difference in price. That a bell price saving - almost.
Thanks for your comment too Tony, the LT77 would be easier for sure I have no doubt on that one, however, the T5 ( WC ) gives me a very high fifth gear - and yes a lot higher cost too initially - but a fifth at 0.63 with my diff of 3.45:1 I am going to clear 30 mpg, I`m doing 27 with the auto with a top of 1:1.
I have now got to fit a third pedal into the Granny as it never had one, plus remote master ( space ) and the lever system, though I will need the bell before choosing the clutch lever & slave so I can work it all out.
Once its all fitted the prop will have to go back to its maker Reco-Prop in Luton who done a very good job last time.
Thanks for your help guys :)
