What Turbo For RV8???

Post by Coops »

What do you need to look for when thinking about turbocharging a v8???

most of you know the specs of my 3.9 now, so what turbo would i need to run on my engine????,
I can't afford the supercharger route at the moment (unless someones got one in the back of the garage) so thinking about turbo charging again :(

I posted a link in the for sale section of a turbo John Sleath was selling:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %26fvi%3D1

(item 120064807712)

it went for £230 which was quite good value and turbos sized for v8's come up rarely. A modern garrett turbo would be a garrett GT30.
How much boost or how much power do you want to run. What's your current compression ratio. Single or twin? - Singles easier less plumbing, but harder to find, twins - look for a turbo from a 2L engine (cossy? etc) - perhaps identify a turbo from a std scooby that gets upgraded regulary.

In my view, the usage of turbos from diesels is unknown - some say yes, some say no - I would avoid them, even though many have used them without problem (in the states)

cheers eliot,
my CR is around 9.35,
i dont want to make huge amounts of boost or BHP,i just want an engine pick me up as a quick option for a bit more power with my current set up without blowing it to pieces.

it would have to be a single turbo as dont think i have the room to run two with the plenum set up i have,

I would still like to go supercharged but think that is a no no now, as priced up a novi 1200, and that was defo out the price range at the moment.

Important note - Tony's pistons are standard rover ones!

My contribution.

Don't forget the holsett ones we were talking about on the other forum.

Also, the big ass one i put pictures up of on the old forum i was offered is still available. About £200 if i remeber correctly.
V8'less but a fountain of dorky knowledge ref v8's!

The one I bought of ebay.com also said it only ships to the USA.
I send an email to the guy and he was more than happy to send it to the UK.
It is always worth asking.

Ideal size in anything ???

How much air do you want to shift ? power ? etc

There are NO factory turbochargers fitted to Subarus that will be any use for a single installation, they are all too small.

If you buy from the US, then regular sstyle turbos arent that expensive.

Precision turbos in the US make some nice compact units, at keen prices.
http://www.precisionturbo.net/turbochar ... ry_id=3027
Turbonetics also do a huge range, and even better offer a 1 year no quibble warranty.
http://www.turboneticsinc.com/turbo_60series.htm
Or Innovate
http://www.innovativeturbo.com/pages/ca ... p?sku=SH61

Something like a T63 or T66 would probably work very well, and leave room to grow. Or the T61 above would also do...

A T4 flanged unit would be best. Opting for T3 now, may restrict options.

Or give Andy Nichols at AET Turbos a call and see what he can do for you. Buying in the UK will probably be a little pricier, but still worth asking.

On a big engine, while a ball bearing turbo would be nice, it really isnt as uch of a bonus as on smalle engines.

And this is why I really hate 'at the wheels' numbers. Assuming for a second that those numbers were from a credible and calibrated dyno it would make you think that the transmission was eating 130HP, or just under 100kW. If that were actually the case then the geabox would melt, the diff would glow red hot and other really nasty heat related damage would occur.

Having said all that is is good proof that if you know what you are doing when you tune it, then fancy bling is not vital. And a very nice looking car.

I cant vouch for their figures....but IMO, all these flywheel guesstimations that are bandied about in the UK are total BS.

I would rather hear wheel figures as measured on a RR, than plucked out of the air flywheel guesses.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding. 130mph terminals in a lightweight TR8, dont shout 650 anything to me.

Prob with RR's is that the same engine will record 2 different figures in 2 different cars. Cars with very lightweight drivetrain such as ally flywheels, small clutches, light wheels and discs and even narrower drive wheels will record better figs than a car equipped with a more standard driveline, but fitted with the same engine. What you're really getting from an RR is the HP of your car, not your engine. They are of course very useful for back to back testing and tuning of a vehicle though.
