TBH, unless the bearings show actual signs of damage, I'd be inclined to leave them unless they are cheap.

Ive had the same high speed bearings in mine now for 6 years. I'm just paranoid about getting the right ones to change them with, even though the original Vortech ones dont look anything special

I have replaced the low speed a few times, but due to belt tension, these see the most abuse.

I would be inclined to stick with Koyo bearings as a manafacturer if you are renewing them, in my experience they are a very high quality brand hence why Honda use them, if you degrease the ones fitted at present and rotate in your hands hold centre with thumb and forefinger and rotate the outer case then wear will be obvious i.e rough & not silky smooth 8-) but i am sure MGB-V8 can steer you in the right direction for those :o

The high speed bearings from the compressor wheel are all knackered, the small inner one was destroyed, the large Koyo outer one is very stiff and rough and the small outer one has a lot of play in it.

The bearings on the low speed pulley side both seem reasonable, I will closely inspect but I think these will be cheap to replace so may well replace them if I have any doubt.

For the high speed bearings i've been looking at ceramic angular contact types, anyone know of 80-90k rpm bearings?

They may exist in ultra high precision catalogues. But that's about it. Your originals probably aren't hybrids though, hence why I think they just overspin lesser bearings.
And if you do find some ultra high precision, they will cost a fortune.

I could find some with a high speed rating for mine in catalogues, they did not exist in the real world though.

Fag, skf and nsk were the only ones that listed them. Koyo didnt, nor did nachi. They just listed regular high precision stuff.

Possible for the SKF but the speed raiting is a little low, can anyone recomend a supplier/stock holder?

I've found a Barden Bearings product list which has some perfect bearings in it rated at 80 & 100k - maybe as Stevie sugests they are imaginary

1x barden 203HJH
1x barden 202HJB

Anyone know where I can get these? I've tried one of their distributers (Femco) but they emaild back asking if I was a company! so don't think i'll get very far with that avenue?

The same catalogue I found high speed 7203's, and the catalogue is the only place in the entire world they exist lol.

NSK did list some in the 100krpm+ range. Dread to think what they would cost if they existed though.

NSK's normal high precision stuff was rated about the same as those in the SKF catalogue in the link, and they were available. At £200 a pair !

Thanks, very interesting forum.

I've since found more detail of various garratt compressor wheels including height and mounting shaft ID, so I have more comfidence that I could make a hybrid using turbo compressor.

I had an email back from a Barden bearings supplier saying neither they or Barden have stock of the high speed bearings I had found, maybe the quantly of 1 put them off! or maybe it is just a brochure of what is possible but then would need large min quantities to do a production run.

Well it's been an interesting few weeks, I've finally got two high speed bearings.
I found two FAG bearing part numbers numbers which were hybrid type and had high enough max speed rating, finally got a quote from a birmingham bearings supplier of £190 each  They were available to order with a 4 week lead time as they could add my order to another big order. More research and I found that these FAG part numbers were actually Barden part numbers - the same Barden numbers that I'd tried and failled to buy at first.
More googling and found a company called alpine bearins, their website listed two bearings which matched my speed requirements, got a quote which worked out at about £75 each inc post from states. On the quote they also quoted the barden part number which I had been searching for originally!
Bit the bullet, ordered these and they came really quickly, off the shelf, very impressed, and they are Barden bearings - hybrid with ceramic balls :D .

So finally making progress, Now I have to sort the compressor wheel!

I work for City Belts and Bearings. We are SKF stockists.
I can ask for a staff price at work if you want?
