Hi Im wondering can you use the neoprene stem seals instead of the tap (washer) type seal?

Yes you can.

The question is whether the valve guides are different - I believe they are but am not 100% sure.

Note that ALL the heads will fit ALL the blocks, only difference being the 4 outer bolt holes on late heads are not drilled- HRC2479.
Later valve guides have steps on the top to take the stem seal shown above. There is talk in the engine manual for 3.9 and 4.2 of a new exhaust valve called 'carbon break', which use a 2mm shorter guide, but I cant find any official mention of these valves anywhere.
