Guys, after missing a bargain manifold on the bay on the weekend, and seeing the price of 2nd hand rather rough looking ones are around £80 - £100 I'm thinking of making my own stainless steel tubular manifold for the engine..... I know it's going to be a fare bit of work to get sorted, but time isn't an issue and the material will probably only cost me £30 - £40.
Now I might be flogging a dead horse on this, so thought I'd get your opinions on it before I started anything!

Building it out of stainless would be a bit of a nightmare unless your used to working with it. Its hellish tough stuff and a lot of your sections are going to have to be custom folded tapered rectangular section. Will also be heavy but that might not be an issue for you. If you can weld it or get it welded alloy would be a far nicer material to work with.

you see the occasional stainless sheet metal manifold, they are generally made from very thin sheet (0.8mm ish for the runners) and are shaped in that the tube ends are rolled to give the correct intake radius and are true works of art, and cost appropriately, the ones I know of are very light weight as a result they are not mass produced! Generally the manifold face to the head is a separate ally piace that is machined to receive a flange formed at the bottom of the runners, again to keep weight down.
Stevie is dead right though, unless you have a lot of experience working with thin sheet stainless you will get better results more easily using ally. . . I suspect as you are asking it is the case that you do have such experience so when you do go ahead and make one please post up the pictures and put my name down for the second one you make
I want one that I can sit a Wipple charger on top of please .
