Is the coolant temp sensor ok? Try disconnecting the cold start injector if you have one.

Just behind the distributor, there's two connectors, a brown one and a white one. It's one of those.....

Has anybody scanned in the Land Rover fault-finding guide for the flapper system yet?

I have a similar problem, I think - runs rich, slightly more sooty exhaust than I expected.

Also - it has this intermittent idle fault - it hunts from say 350 to 750rpm when warm/hot, whereas at cold it stays rock steady at 800rpm. This hunting also causes it to stall when i come off the throttle hard, or am coming down the gears to a junction and slowing.

Other times and on the move, it's fine. Sometimes even when hot, irritatingly

Is that the butterfly or something else?

Very frustrating but does seem primarily related to engine bay heat so going to put one fan on permanantly and get some vents in.

This doc:
http://www.cowdery.org.uk/downloads/V8EFiSystem.pdf

(borrowed from somewhere) has a full diagnosis for the flapper system. If you find the bit to check the coolant sensor, you do it from the ECU connector (to also check out the wiring / connectors), that should help.
