Oil pump drain/repacking

Post by Dolomite-Sprint »

Hi All, I have a TR7-V8 with an EFI engine I guess from an SD1 originally. I left the car laid up and predictably the oil pump has drained. I have tried running it in reverse with dizzy out but no luck. I will need to get at pump to re pack. My question is, can i get to the gear teeth without removing the engine front cover? Is the base of the oil pump removable? Looking at the botton right of timing cover there are 6 star bolts/set screws near the oil filter housing, is this likely to be the base of the oil pump? Sorry if i sound very 'green' but need to know if it is a few hours job or day or two as a long way from car at mo! Also what gaskets will i need for any reassembly and would it be possible/easy/worth changing the oil pressure relief valve to get a little more pressure? If so where would be the best place to get one from?
Many thanks for your help in advance

Hi remove oil filter and the six star bolts and you find the oil pump gears, pack then with Petroleumn jelly and re fit the base make sure you fill filter with oil.I then use a tool i made up remove the dissy the tool goes down onto oil pump drive and connect it to a electric drill as soon as pressure come up you will feel it.
You could try filling the oil filter first and make sure the oil pressure vavle is not stuck its the big nut down by the filter.

Hi,
Another TR7 V8 :D As tricky said, but ensure your drill is turning the correct direction if using a 'special tool' to prime the pump.
Tricky did you say you were planning to be up The Pod for the Retro show ? Would love to see your car if you are.
Cheers John

why are you running it in reverse? the distributor goes clockwise and so does the pump !
So thats where it went !

Also if you take the dissy out you are removing the drive for the oil pump! Put the dissy back in and give it a quick crank over without the plugs in to check pressure, otherwise take the dissy back out and make a tool out of a piece of bar with a slot in the end, put in a drill and spin the oil pump through the dissy hole to see if it draws any oil back up. The more you remove gaskets etc by re-packing the pump, the more likely you are to disturb something and get a leak.

I'm with Top Cat here

Leave the pump alone and get a priming tool

Remove Dizzy
Insert tool and spin with a drill
Get pressure
Remove tool
Insert Dizzy
Set timing

Drive

Who told you to run the pump backwards to prime the oil system?

Get a priming tool and a decent drill so you can spin it up to 2000-3000 rpm.

I've had my car laying idle for up to 9 months and this always works fine for me.

Look here chaps!!

Find the latest list and stick your names down. Bones is organiser for the day. If he has run out of pit passes let me know and I'll blag a couple from my MGDRC allocation.
