What cam for a RV8 4.6 ?
Hi Guys,
I'm building a 4.6 lump using the parts from my 3.5. I was planning to use the RealSteel typhoon but have just noticed that one of the lobes is worn down by about 1mm. The cam is only 5k old and all the other lobes look really good so I'm well piddled off
(I now need new lifters and will have to annoy the neighbours by running the thing in!)
Anyway what are your recommendations for a replacement cam?
The motor will have stage III heads, performer manifold and Edelbrock carb. I won't be revving it over 6k RPM.
Piper 285?
Pete

I've gone for the Crower 50232 from Paul at V8 Tuner, he has them on special offer at the moment. My engine spec is very similar to yours but only 4.355cc.
The cam should match your engines requirements and is certainly worth a look.
Kevin.
What the offer and do you know whether the cam has the serpentine keeper mod?
Edit....It does have the mod, I'll give him a ring!
Cheers,
Pete

Pete,
Yes the cam machined for the retainer, it was about £130.00

I've got a Crane 218 in my 4.6 and it pulls like a train. Idles down to 600 rpm, reasonably smooth, with wallops of mid range torque, right where you need it on a road car.
This is in a lightweight manual SD1. For a heavy 4x4 I'd want something a bit milder that gives less outright power and more off-the-line stump pulling torque, maybe the one RPI did with Piper Cams (RP???).

Hi Rob,
I like the idea of a low tickover, my sidepiped cobra sound really good with a low tickover, the problem with my 3.5 lump was that it would stall shortly after being left to tickover at such a low idle!
I'll add the crane 218 to my list!
Crower 50232
Piper 270
Piper 285
Crane 218
(Not getting another typhoon, as they only last 5k miles!)

Have a chat with V8Development.
They do a stealth cam which is less agressive than their H404.

Well worth the call.

V8Dev seem to charge 3 times as much for their cams as anyone else!
The heads were done by V8Dev and I always said that they were very good, well the gas flowing that you could see was very good.
I've now taken the valves out as the heads need skimming and to be honest the area around the throats was not very good at all! I spent 2 hours with a burr sorting it out and had to be VERY careful not to damage the seats.
I am a little disappointed in v8dev!

I seem to recall that they want about 400 quid for a cam, I doubt that even with discount it will come down to the same price as a piper.
(I'm sure that its a very good cam but I ain't got 400 quid kicking about)
Also I was a little "disappointed" with the porting that you normally don't see.
RPI have been very helpful so they're getting my business at the moment!
Thanks for the "heads up" on the discount!
Pete
i tried to get discount with rpi a few years back but they were not interested in helping the forum members with discount,
also v8 tuner gives the forum members discount on cams,

I did not need the kit as I've got decent springs and a vernier timing set that has only done 2k miles.
I guess that V8Dev would have sold me just the cam, maybe for around the same price as the piper 285 but I've coughed up for it now!
I think that piper have a good name in the cam industry so hopefully it will be OK.
Thanks for your help though.
