Oil pump thread adapters

Post by The Original Tom »

Time to resurrect my old plans - I want to fit a pressure gauge as well as my warning light.
I've read that the warning lights are crap and come on at too low values.
I see that 1/8"BSF t-pieces are easy to come-across, so:

I'll need:
- an adapter to go from 1/2"UNF male (the hole in the oil pump housing) to 1/8"BSF female.
- a new oil pressure switch (1/8"BSF) that switches at a more sensible value - about 15psi? (suggestions?)
- Oil capillary hose with 1/8"BSF fittings at the ends (1 male, 1 female)

I'd like to be able to get these 3 things, plus a t-piece, from the same place to cut down on shipping costs.

Cheers
Tom.

Or could I just get a 1/2"UNF banjo bolt and use the banjo connection to feed the gauge, whilst tapping the head of the bolt to accept the 1/2"UNF pressure switch?

The biggest problem I have when doing this sort of job is working out what I've got, what I want to do, what gear is available, and what combination of all three is likely to work out with a satisfactory result.

Tell me about it Paul - It's a nightmare trying to work out what I need, and even more so trying to articulate it to someone else in words via email!

Any way I've emailed Think Auto (cheers Ian) and I hope they understand what I'm after  If not I'll have to end them a picture  Mind you I suppose they get emails from all sorts

I'm close enough take in the parts and say connect this to that with 4 foot of pipe

They take the parts away to the back store and come back with the bits!

One tip, the 1/2" UNF thread in the pump is within a gnats cock of 1/4bspp, in case you need to fit something like that. A tap will run down it with minimal effort. I have done that with mine, as my oil pressure gauge came with 1/4 bspp fitting and i had a 1/4bspp plug in hand for the other hole.

(bspp = British Standard Pipe Parallel)

The warning light is typically 7 psi …………….. the spec is 5.8 – 10.2 psi.

There are 3 ports on the pump cover and all of these ports are connected together internally …………. Certainly on the RR 3.5 / 3.9 / early 4.6, two of the ports are threaded ½ UNF ……….. the other port is different and I don’t have that to hand right now, but its nothing special.

Screw the oil pressure switch into one port and ½ UNF to whatever adaptor in the other port ………….. no need for a T piece ……………….. you can also screw an oil temp sensor into the 3rd port. Adaptors from ½ UNF to NPT or BSP are available from Real Steel ……..

Here is a listing of the intermotor oil pressure switches ……(Rover OEM is intermotor – Part 50600)
