Range EFI 3.9 front cover oil seal

Post by roule35 »

Hi,
Remove the old seal...looks quite good. Any more i put a new one but not seems to be perfectly "watertight".
Finally, I decided to put side to side the 2 seals, in case the new one is not 100% good .
Any suggestions ?

Not sure what you are asking ?

Do you have a leak or not ?

Hard to dell damage or issues sometimes from the outside, unless it's major damage.

That pic is very blurry if it is trying to show something ?

I just wonder if i can put the two seals side to side. I have enough room for this. If the first one is leaking, the second one protect...am i right?

In fact, I fear that the frame will be slightly deformed, although I used a wooden block...
In short, either I remove the 2 seals to put a new one in, or I leave it like that with the probability that the 2nd one will disintegrate over time between the 1st seal and the protection plate (n°3 in the diagram). ..

I would think the outside seal would fail in short time……no lubricatoon so seal will overheat melt/burn

If a double seal was a good idea the Rover boys would have done it at the factory

OK i keep only one on my cover. I put the older one but in good shape.
The inner lip is good as the spring. The outer lip (photo) is a little damaged but it doesn't matter for the seal efficiency...
Agree?

If the seal is soft, the inner part undamaged, and the spring good, then it should be fine.

Manual says : Press in the oil seal until the plain face is 1.5mm below the gear cover face. Mine is just at the same level as i use a wooden block, and not a press. If i do more i fear to damage the face. Is it important to go 1,5 mm furthur ?
