SD1 Timing Marks

Ahoy !
Have treated myself to a strobe timing light ! However, can't find my Tippexed mark on the pulley.
The vehicle is an old kit car that tends to have space problems around the front of a SD1 V8
so is it likely that there are different pulley/pointer options ?

SD1 pulleys have an engraved scale on the vibration damper. If it is a bit rusty, may need cleaning with wire wool, etc.

Set the engine at TDC on cyl1, and then look to see if anything on the pulley, aligns with anything

Started from scratch again and found timed up on a different plug as 'No.1'
Putting strobe light on the actual 'No.1' meant timing marks not illuminated.
Had difficulties in getting sufficient retardation with electronic distributor as attached module clashed with cylinder head.
Fitted horizontal thermostat outlet so problem now solved !

Sounds like the dizzy wasn't fitted by the book, or the wrong dizzy for your layout. On an SD1 engine, the ignition module is near enough square across the front of the engine when correct. But the position of the vacuum unit is different between R R and SD1 dizzies. On the SD1, plug lead 1 on the cap should be closest to the rad and to the nearside.

If your timing marks are not aligning when linked to #1 cylinder (or its opposite number) that would indicate that you have mis-matched pulley and pointer. Would be worth checking what the relationship is when #1 piston is at TDC.
What plug have you used to time it?
