12 year old "new" engine start up

Post by steve b »

Long time since I've been on the forum!
Kids mortgage etc
Anyway I had a new engine built about 12 years ago and it's not been fired up yet! I regularly turn it over by hand so no problem there, I'm sure all the assembly lube has dripped into the sump by now.
Question is any recommendations for first time start up apart from priming the oil pump? Thought about pouring oil directly into the oil gallery and on the valve gear then quick sharp buttoning everything back together 🤞.

If you prime the pump before any cranking, in terms of lubrication can't see any reason to do anything else. Just prime until there is good oil pressure for a few seconds.

I'd also put a squirt of oil down each bore. Enough to cover the piston top.

Primed the oil 18 years ago with vasoline in the pump, filled the engine with oil today ,spun the oil pump drive and bingo good oil pressure 👍👍
Saw oil coming out of the lifters but not much out of the rocker assembly 🤔

You don't get a lot out of the rocker assy. A slow dribble between each rocker and the pedestal.

You can run the Rover V8 (at idle) with the rover covers off, and it won't make a mess.
