Timing chain

Post by sowen »

I have a rover v8 with a vernier duplex timing chain set fitted. There is about 1/2" deflection on the chain when fitted, with a little slack in the links when I pulled it off. I can't tell if the teeth are worn, but my instinct tells me that it is just the chain.

Rimmers sell either the complete kit for £160 or just the chain on its own for £30. The question is, do you think I can get away with just replacing the chain, or should I just get a complete new kit, and how much should I expect to pay for it, knowing that Rimmers are usually quite expensive?

From my expierence with various chains, it really comes down to looking at the wear pattern on the teeth, compare one side with the other, u can get away with it once, then u need to scrap the lot, but £160 sounds a bit expensive to me...check out some other sellers and change the lot if u can, john
So thats where it went !

Just found this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Piper-Range-Rover ... dZViewItem

It's what I've got (but brand new) and for not bad a price. I could go to Rimmers and buy just the chain for £30, and look into getting a hotter cam to go into my engine at a later date. Its currently got a well used Kent 180 in there, which still has bigger lobes than a factory cam, but will need replacing in the next 10-20K miles, (or when my wallet gets too big 8-) )

I don't want to go and spend loadsa money on something that I really don't need so I'll probably go down the £30 to Rimmers unless somebody can convince me otherwise.

Have a look here - prices are considerably better than you have been quoted

PS I realise these are not vernier pulleys but do they really make that much difference?

I presume that if there was an adjustable set-up in there before, it was there for a reason so should go back in. I've temporarily put a spare standard chain into the engine just to get it making noises, but its a long term project using odds and ends that I have lying about, and spangly bits as and when funds allow 8)

the vernier pulleys make a difference if you want to squeze every bit of hp out by timing the cam exact to the manufac specs,
