Special tool to dismantle press-fit piston gudgeon pins?

Post by dnb »

The Land Rover v8 manual shows a special tool for assembling and dismantling pistons and conrods.

I don't have easy access to such a tool, so is there an easy way to make something for the dismantling part of the job, or can I be pointed at somewhere to buy/hire/borrow such an implement?

I would prefer to keep both pistons and rods in usable order after this operation. Thanks for any advice - I'm more used to spiraloks and circlips.

I use 2 pieces of angle iron welded together to form a V and cradle the piston. I have a piece of bar just narrower than the pin and with a smaller end to fit inside the pin. All put into a press and push the pin out. It released with a bang but after that it presses out smoothly. Never damaged a piston or rod doing it this way.
