core plug sealant??

Post by Ralphh85 »

what sealant do people use? have machined up ali core plugs, so hopefully they wont corrode like steel ones.

i dont think so, if anything when you have steel and ali together in sea water, the galvanic corrosion rots the ali first, i think steel bolts rot the ali on landrovers?

but anti freeze should stop any of that anyway.

if there was need for a sacrificial anode of any sort like on a boat, i hope they wouldnt tuck it behind the flywheel and under exhaust manifold lol.

willing to bet they will out last steel being same material as the block.

Hi
if you have gone to the effort of making the bungs why not thread plugs and block with a BSPT or NPTT thread and use PTFE tape to seal it, NASCAR practice and if anyone sees it it will impress the he11 out of them if they know what they are looking at :D
otherwise I use carbuilder solutions urathane/cyanacrolite sealer stuff, just use gloves when you apply the stuff!

already done them, threaded bungs would be easy enough but doing the block would have been a pain in the ass!

also this way any time in the future i can replace with originals, and its probably lighter lol.

If they were threaded wouldn't they lose their block saving abilities if it were to freeze?

i dont think its been scientifically proven they save blocks, help maybe but they are put there just to cover holes required when casting as far as i know, yanks call them freeze plugs which confuses it all, plus theres no real excuse for letting your engine freeze?

mine froze 2 years back, none popped out, im a slack barstod an left it outside the rolling road over christmas break with just water in it :P
