which chain/follers for my cam

Post by Ralphh85 »

finally got the cam sorted, got a H218 Kent cam, which it says doesnt need spring mods, question is presumably i can get away with standard chain?

is there any point in different followers? its rev range is 1500 - 5000 but i dont really know what it would red line to? i will have fairly light valve train so will probably rev on a bit.

OE Land Rover followers are ok. Make sure you go for a good quality chain as there are quite a few aftermarket Ebay types around that stretch in no time.

I've got a Crane 218 cam and run Eaton lifters and Rollmaster timing gears/chain.

The Cloyes timing gear set is pretty good. And it gives you the option for minor valve timing tweaks by having 3 key ways. You can advance or retard cam timing by 2 degree's each way for fine tuning if required. Its a nice duplex pre stretched chain set that will last for ages.

Ive brought one of the cloyes sets from eBay, there actually from v8 tuner. Seems ok and better than the crappy nylon thing I bought previous which was terrible quality.

donno but it mentions it on v8 tuner, just found this....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TVR-Morgan-Ma ... 292&_uhb=1

they say it wont fit 4.6 due to the cam phase sensor, howvere this wouldnt be an issue as im not running one.

they also mention clearence but i think i read on here thats over comeable to.

Exactly what engine are you using, including oil pump and timing covers ?

I just used regular stuff on my 4.6, but I was using an old timing cover and pump setup.

Dont forget, when they advertise stuff it will be for direct replacement so isnt always relevant if your engine is a mixup of parts.

mines standard 4.6, with dizzyless end and crank driven oil pump/flat belt.

however emerald ecu so no need for cam phase sensor.

the piper one looks good so hopefully it might fit.

4.6, no dizzy hole, flat 5 rib belt,

if you can shed any light on it that would be great,

Hi Ralph,
Can you clarify.
Are you using a front cover which has a hole for a dizzy or are you using a 4.0/4.6 type which has not got a dizzy hole?

As far as I know, the earlier cams will not fit inside the non dizzy type cover.
These covers are 20mm thinner than dizzy type covers.

Most aftermarket cams and chain sets are for earlier covers which includes the serp belt dizzy cover with crank driven oil pump.
If your Kent cam has the snout on the front for the dizzy cog then I dont think it wil fit into the 4.6 type non dizzzy cover.
