New V8D engine does this sound ok

Post by leylandracer »

A bit curious/worried if the noise on idle is ok or not< I’ve put a vid on utube which sort of picks up the noise, if i increase the revs it isnt there, after having a V8D 5.0 in the past this one just doesn’t sound nice, its hard to explain the noise...maybe a metallic tapping? the cam is a V8D stealth cam. I’ve tried a listening rod but all seems OK with that. The lad who did the mapping is calling round at the weekend to do a bit of fine tuning, the idle isn’t good, i have two AFR gauges in each bank with one showing 14.-- and the other at 16.--
Sorry for the poor description, hopefully it can be heard on the vid.

Thanks
Steve

Sounds like loose lifters at idle to me.

Ive just listned to the vid on the laptop and it doesnt pick the noise up as good as on the PC, If you listen above the normal clatter? you can pick the noise up.
If it was a loose lifter will it be safe to do a bit of gentle mapping?

I would make sure the pre loads were set correctly and that my oil system was good. Even with stock rover lifters you can get the lifter rattle at idle.

Without hearing it live I cant be sure. If you see the oil pressure increase with a gentle rise in revs and it goes quiet then it sounds like lifters for deffo.

Did I see that Capri on the back of a lorry on the M1 last Saturday ???

My 5.2L engine has got similar noise. it has got mechanical cam and roller rockers + bush between rockers, not spring. i think your sound slightly louder than mine..
I´m not sure is Stealth cam mechanical or hydraulic?
Or could it be piston slap? Is the voice similar when engine is cold and warm?

The noise is there cold or warm, The cam is hydraulic.
V8D have suggested taking the car down to them for a listen, suppose that’s the best plan, its hard to know where the noise is coming from but i would guess somewhere from the front in the valley. as mentioned its only at idle :(

Do you have an oil pressure gauge??

If so, what is the idle oil pressure when the noise occurs, and at what pressure does the noise go away if you gently increase rpm ??

What oil - could it have been misfilled with some fully synthetic lightweight stuff the econoboxes use?

I ran my SD1 on the posh fully synthetic stuff 5-40? my BMW uses, thinking I could get a better deal in bulk. The SD1 was no noisier, but the near zero oil pressure was a worry as were the more leaks than usual. :D

Cold oil pressure on idle (700rpm) is around 28 dropping to 25 aprox warm, i'm guessing there isnt anything wrong there, The first oil which went in was the new (expensive :-() Millers 10-50 Nanodrive i ended up changing it last week to Valvoline VR1 20w50, tbh there isnt any diference re: oil pressure with either oil.
Chris who does the mapping had a listen today & is certain its from the top end but with not been a expert with the RV8 wouldnt like to say what, but deffo not piston slap & it doesnt increase with revs, i would say it goes when the revs increase.
Im going to arrange to take it down to V8D next week but not sure to give it a gentle run there or trailer it, supose better safe then sorry.
