Timing strobe pick up problem.

Post by landy_v8 »

Having a strange problem.

I am trying to adjust the timing after fitting a new dizzy and the strobe wont pick up a signal from the lead to plug 1. Its the type that clips over the lead and it will pick up from others. I have tried swapping plug leads around but it will only pick up from about half of the leads. All the leads are the same type and I have tried a different strobe and its the same.

Any ideas?

Jon

I would have a look at the cap or rotor, have you replaced the cap or rotor, as there are 2 different types of rotor arm,

Hi Ian,

Yes I have replaced the cap and rotor but have tried every combination possible but still get the same results.

The engine runs, if a little rough but I cant get the timing strobe to pick anything up. I can get it to work on the lead to plug 6 but not 1

I am totally stumped.

I would think it may be an Idea to check you have a spark at No1
Whatdissy are you using, because there are two heights for the rotor arm, depending on what dissy you have, you can get a combination where the rotor arm is too low to get a good contact whih the contacts in the cap, try your old rotor arm.

Hi Ian,

I have checked and I do have a spark on plug 1. That was one of the first things I checked.

Its a 35DLM8 dizzy with the correct height rotor arm. I tried fitting the old points dizzy and it was the same!

I am going to rip it all out and start from basics tomorrow. Maybe I have missed something daft?

Right, I have removed the dizzy, pulled the plugs, cleaned them as they were a bit fouled (still havent tuned the carbs properly yet), Re timed everything and put it all back.

I can now pick up from plug lead 1 and the timing is sorted.

Next issue!

I have attached a multimeter that has a tach facility and sometimes I get a stable reading and others its jumping all over the place. Its a 35DLM8 dizzy with the standard amp.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Jon
