3.5/3.9 Lucas Throttle Position Sensor

Post by Quagmire »

Chaps,

I recently changed my spangly 4.6 Plenum (on my 3.5 powered Rover P6) for a 3.9 unit as it is slightly lower at the front and doesn't rub the underside of the bonnet.

However, the Throttle position sensor is dead and looking around the usual LR/Rover suppliers the price of a new one is anywhere between £55 for a Britpart unit or £255 for a real one!

So can anyone suggest cheaper alternatives to look for that would replace LR part numbers ERR2263 or ETC8495a easily?

I am running MS so anything that senses the throttle sweep can be calibrated with no bother, I just need something that physically fits.

I have seen various references to a unit on RS (I think it was made by Vishay?) but they are no longer available.

Thanks!

I know about that problem, after swapping my ROVER to fuel
injection when I was a newbie (and took the wrong, old system)
I ended with a faulty TPS and looked at Rimmer for a new item
and needed an oxygen tent to survive that shock <=> 175 GBP!!!!!!

I ended with a FORD TPS and adaptors from aluminium.
Unfortunately I have no photos from the ROVER at
hand but I swapped also my other Triumph TR6 to MS:

From than on I only use this widely availiable TPS sensor that only
requires a massive shaft where you mill a half moon end to.
It is VW, SAAB and many others and is about 20 Euros.
Cheers

Snag is any analogue pot with a decent life ain't going to be cheap retail.

There are hall effect ones around with no track to wear out - but I have no experience of them. I'd ask on the MS forum. I assume it fits on the end of the throttle spindle so standard 8mm?

I purchased an OE Lucas unit from a Land Rover dealer before they sky rocketed about 55 from memory but that was over 8 years ago 8) there is a supplier on line selling the Lucas ones but with the earlier round plug fitted (easily changed) for a more respectable figure :D

It is marked as discontinued at RS (UK) but others may have it.

It is a Vishay Model 971 and the RS part number is 319-310
