Chrome Alternator Rover SD1

Post by martin_t »

Hi

I want to get a chrome alternator for my SD1engined Cobra. I am just not sure about alternators though. Will any alternator work for any car? If I buy a Buick (where Rover originated) alternator from the states, would it be OK. Does it matter what the output is? (as long as its at least as powerfull as the original).

Thanks for any advice

Martin

Couple of things to be careful of

Make sure the pulley takes the same size belt.

A lot of older American alternators had external regulators so make sure the one you pick is internal.

Make sure its handed the right way and in the brackets and all that are in the right place for where your putting it.

You will either have to make sure its the same physical size or make your own mounting brackets.

Output wise make it the same or larger.

You could always take a standard alternator and get it chromed.

If the alternator you want turns out to be external regulator type worry not. The external regulators are easily available from the US, for my Chrysler alternator a company called Echlin provided one.
