Starter motor reconditioning

Hi guys, my starter doesn't always engage and grinds on the flywheel. Is this a DIY fix?,or would it need to go somewhere to,be done? And recommendations? Don't a fancy buying one of the cheap new ones, been there done that, lasted about 6 months! Cheers mike
