Ford coil packs

Post by deetes »

Anyone know how to test ford coil packs to see if they are any good?

Trying to run TVR390 with Megasquirt and wasted spark. Ticks over really roughly, will not take any throttle at all and the coil drivers are getting hot. Checked eveything I can think of including all the settings and wiring. NGK BR7ES plugs as recomended by MS supplier. Gonna try other coil packs to see if that makes any difference.

Any help on this subject would be much appreciated.

Compare them with a reference (i.e. known to be OK) coil pack with a multimeter. Check the resistance of the primary & secondary windings.

Chris.

P.S. have you tried looking at the spark on a plug outside the engine?

From what I remember of fault diagnosis at uni last month, Get your multimeter with one probe on the central pin, and test the two outer pins one at a time, the resistance should be the same. Substitution is normally the best way to go to check them.
If it dont fit, force it. If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway!
