Problems dismantling LT77 gearbox

Post by martin_t »

Hi
I Need some advice on how to get the 5th gear assembly off the mainshaft of an LT77 gearbox. I got the circlip, spacer and support plate off after a fight but can't move the synchro assembly etc (I think thats what it is!).
Someone has told me about a tool with a ref: 18G 705 and attachement 18G 705-1 but I have no idea what this looks like or where I could get one??
I can send a picture of my problem if it helps anyone to understand what I am talking about!

Thanks for any advice

Martin

syncro is only held on with a circlip and shouldn't be hard to remove assuming you have removed the selector. Do you have the layshaft 5th gear itself of which needs a puller to get off?

Hi Marki

I have taken the circlip off and the space and first plate but the synchro gear won't shift. I understand about the 5th gear and realise I need a puller for that its the other I can't get off

I've had the same experience with a box recently.

This site is invaluable - I've got a copy in my scrapbook - http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/lt77.html

In the end because I could not get a long enough puller I clamped the centre plate in the vice and hit the end of the mainshaft with a soft faced hammer until eventually the synchro hub was free of its splines.

If you can get sight of an LT77S manual it has some very useful tools you can make yourself, I can generate pdf's of the pages from my electronic copy if you want them - contact me by private mail.

My understanding is that Martin has a two wheel drive gearbox which has a considerably longer mainshaft making finding a long enough puller quite problematic.

Let us know who its going Martin....

Hi

It's not going!! I still have no idea how to get the damn thing off the mainshaft. I guess the 5th gear removal from the Layshaft will be fairly simple but I just don't know how to get the sychcro gear off the mainshaft without damaging anything??

Regards

Thanks for you help Martin
-------------------------------

You can get them from a LR supplier or LT77 rebuilder with those numbers. However, that would be a pity if you are only using them for one job.

Do you have a LR gearbox specialist around? Then you could just borrow them..leaving a deposit as comfort if you are not known to them.

Thanks again for that. I am working abroad again all next week but will try and find a LR dealer in the Newark/Lincoln area when I get back and have some time to spend on my engine!!

You may be interested in my website which is basically a diary of my car project. If you have a look on the "Gearbox" section you will see a picture of the point I am at and the problem I have.

Looks OK on explorer :D

Its just really a diary for me and anyone who is interested, so not spending a lot of time on it. Suprised its a bit messy on Firefox though...
