I need to shorten a jenson axle, i hear good things about having the shafts cut & friction welded, does any one know how reliable they are in a high power application?
Scimitar shafts would work for me, but I can not find any, unless anyone can help? thanks

Re: Friction welded half shafts?
Friction welding done properly is efectively the same as the base material, strength wise.

Yeah come to think about it, valve heads are friction welded I believe?

Very different application though, and loadings etc. Although friction welding would probably be very good if you could find somewhere to do it. I've seen some shafts sleeved and welded and used in some very fast cars on CV type shafts, which was very unexpected.
But surely it's more common if you want to shorten a shaft, to have it re-splined at the shorter length ?
or just get custom shafts made ?

The shafts are necked down after the splines, not enough meat to respline. Ive found this company looks like they know their stuff. http://www.cpsdrivelink.co.uk/friction-welding/
Its all down to cost, custom shafts, what do they cost?

Re: Friction welded half shafts?
Cool video.
I guess what they're doing should be fast and relatively cheap.
I had a pair of custom Moser shafts made a few years back ( well several actually ) and they were only around £350 a pair. But that was some time ago and dollar rate was much better.
c-clip axles just refers to having a small section inside the diff where they use a c-clip for axle retention. I just designed mine to correct length etc and cut this off as I wouldnt be using it as I used bearing setup that provided retention.
Not sure of a non-typical spline setup might add more cost than their common applications.

The shafts are tapered, Im waiting for the company to get back to me I suspect they may have problems holding the shafts......I might have to try cutting them parrallel....
I think the cost of custom shafts from the US will be painfull......
