i have a rover v8 and auto box out of an a plate sd1, how do i identify which it is as when i put it in to test fit it i appear to have cracked the dipstick tube but the ones ive seen go into the bottom of the pan mine goes in at the top near the slector

sounds like a gm180, is it on the r/h ... drivers side?

If it like this off an A plated SD1 then its a GM180.
I've had two and they were both bulletproof, very common on GM cars, generally available and repairable.

My son even used one in a Lada Riva Coupe V8 Dragster.
