What's this LT77 from?

Post by ratwing »

I've bought a gearbox from an SD1, it looked like an LT77 and has the 5 speed plus reverse LT77 shift pattern but on looking closer, it doesn't have the long rounded boss by the drain plug so no serial number there.
The closest to a stamped serial number I can find is on the bottom edge of the flange for the bellhousing, its 1 or I then what looks like the front half of a poorly stamped 8 (like a backwards 3) then M9998B but I can't find any reference to numbers like these.
Also, what I assume is the filler/level plug is on the other side (drain on offside, filler on nearside) in the ally tail casting, not in the cast iron main case and both castings have the raised swirly British Leyland logo.
The tail casting also has the bolts & brackets for V8 exhausts to run on either side.
I'll be using it anyway but am curious about why it looks different?
