I guess anything is possible with a Pop.

Any idea what autobox you want? Something like a BW65 or GM180 from a Rover SD1 would probably be easiest.

The pop has got an early SDI engine in it , we believe out of a sherpa police van

It won't be an SD1 engine if it's from a Police Van. The LDV V8's were basically a Range Rover engine with a different airbox, water pump and brackets / pulleys to make it a bit shorter.

Have you sourced a box yet?, or got a look in on one?

I went from auto to manual on my pop, many, many years ago,

Good luck , have you tried :google

There are basically three boxes which bolt straight on. B-W 35/65. The 65 is a stronger box - and should be easy to get as it was used on the SD1. The 35 was used on the P6.

TH180. Used on later SD1. Vacuum controlled, so responds rather better then the BW. Very smooth changing - but perhaps not so strong as the BW65.

ZF 4HP. A four speed rather than three like the others. Basically, has an added overdrive. Quite rare in RWD versions as only used on the Sherpa van.
But 4x4 versions can be converted by using bits from other RWD cars like Jags and BMWs. Later versions have a degree of electronic control. Early ones cable.

The ZF would be my choice if you have the room for it - it's quite a bit bigger than the three speeders.
