R380 gearbox

Post by Devonrod »

Does anyone have info about R380 gearboxes fitted to LDV vans, do they fit straight on a Rover V8? ive trawled the net and as usual there are conflicting opinions.

The box will fit but first gear is useless as it's a crawler gear.

You do need the right bellhousing though to fit the V8.

The pinion is marginally longer on the R380 than the LT77, I don't think it's an issue on the V8, but some engines that orignally had an LT77 it binds on the end of the flywheel. I had to make a thin spacer shim to go between the bellhousing and gearbox for a T16 engine. The selector mechanism sits about 1" further back and the rear mounting is different. Overall length and general size/shape is the same.
