MGB / Ford 9" Hybrid axle build ???
I've been doing some research and buying a few small parts so far and its looking quite good at the moment ??
I'm waiting for a set of 31 spline diff gears to arrive and next week I'll be ordering a pair of 31 spline shafts from the US of A
When all the bits are on the table I will start measuring stuff up. But from what I have seen so far I think I can fit the drive gears and shafts into my MGB axle and still retain the MGB rear braking system ?? There will of course be some machining involved.
When I have some stuff I will post some pictures.

Quick update!
The 31 spline side gears need trimming flat on two side by just 10mm and they will slide inside the MGB diff cage.
My machine shop guy has a spare diff so he can work out how to make a boring tool.
Last night I started fiddling with a Ford 9" spool that Kiwicar gave me. The outer bearings drop straight into the existing bearing housings in the casing. But guess what??? The Ford 9" bearings are slightly smaller on the O/D than the MGB bearings. I had two new MGB tapered diff bearings delivered yesterday, and from what I can see the inner bore of the MGB bearings are the same or very close to the Ford 9" bearings. I wont know for sure until I cut the Ford bearings off. But the MGB bearings measure 1.77" in the bore. And it looks like the Ford bearings are 1.78" in the bore. So thats good news.
While I'm waiting to be able to pull the diff from the MG I will keep tinkering with the spool on a spare axle case. I cant pull the diff until after next weekend when its finished being on show at the MG / Triumph day at Stoneleigh. Then it will be full steam ahead to pull the V8 diff and see what fits what ???

In the landrover world a metric bearing is slightly smaller than the imperial bearing, so you can buy a sleve that goes over the bearing to bring it back up to imperial size:

(i've got a couple of those lying around somewhere)

Well who would have thunk it ??
The mock up axle is a Salisbury for the 1800 MGB. I trimmed some meat off the spool so the MGB Crown wheel would drop on.
Bugger me if it aint just 15 thou off perfect mesh with the pinion ??
I'm looking forward to next week now when I pull my V8 axle out for final measurements and fettling

DaviesDJ wrote:Are those bearings sitting spot on pel? Or will they need any fettling? When the caps are clapped on is the lash etc ok??
The bearings will sit where ever they want to Dave. As long as there is no free play side to side. The final fitting will be sorted by machining the spool flange and the crown wheel ?
Today I fitted the finished shims and the spool sits perfect in the mock up casing. Tomorrow my joib has been cancelled so I can pull my rear axle out and start fitting the bits into the actual rear end the I will be using.

stevieturbo wrote:So the 9" spool bolted to your crownwheel with no real work, and it just drops into the axle casing too ?
WOW !
It dropped into the axle case with no probs Stevie. The Ford spool has 10 bolts. The MGB crown wheel has 8 bolts.
I will need to re drill the spool flange to suit which is no problem.
You seem surprised that this has gone so easily?? Well !!! So was I
