I broke the Moser shafts !!!
Dagnabbit !!!
I thought that I was safe last weekend. I hit the track for a test run and made a 9.6 which was good as it got me back on last years PB time for the first run of the season which I was happy with. Heres a rooftop view of the 9.6 run.
Then I added 3 degree's of timing and tried again. This time not so good as the extra grunt bust my shafts

Moser are the cheaper of the shaft suppliers, although they do offer a few different styles
What diameter are they, splines, how did they fail etc ?
I twisted a few splines years ago. Seemed the thicker the shaft itself, the more chance of the splines twisting.
Basically...a flexible twisty shaft can be a good thing.
I since moved on to some shafts from Mark Williams. Much more expensive, totally different material, and zero issues.

Not sure what base you use, but if it's within their range, speak to Mark Williams.
Or ARRC I think used Strange shafts on Coops axle ?
When I enquired with Strange they said they couldnt offer me anything for some reason
The shafts were made from stock size Ford 9" blank stock and machined to have MGB hub setup on one end and then turned down to fit the MGB diff gears on the drive ends.
I have now figured out that I can slightly alter my diff cage so the thick section of the shaft will fit through the bearing carriers and into the diff cage.
I have also found a Ford 9" mini spool jobby that can be machined down to fit inside the diff when the four small cogs are removed. This only fixes into postion with a diff pin, so I intend to make some girdle plates to weld onto the spool and onto the diff cage itself. You can see in the picture how much fatter the new shafts will be with Ford 31 spline ends.

With such a large shaft and small splines, they are always going to take a bashing.
The only Moser shafts that never twisted on me were the 28 spline small diameter shafts
All the 31 splines twisted, but they were also all larger diameter shafts. As did the 28 spline with the larger diameter shaft.
So a bit of flex can go a long way to saving them
But ultimately they need to be stronger anyway. Give Mark Williams a shout
These are the ones I got.

Wow Pel that is some twist! What grade of steel are those ?? Did they go at launch?? And if so would it help to ease off on the initial NOS delivery?? Bet that made an expensive noise when it went!! One of those Nast metallic noises that resonates through the cabin!!!
Best wishes mate

Spent so much on trial and error!
This is why the Ford 9" is so sought after !ChrisJC wrote:Do people ever do anything radical like get the axle of a 7 tonne truck and make that narrower? I would think going totally overboard would eliminate this kind of issue.
Impressive twist though on those spines!
Chris.
Most American cars/trucks go about 2ton plus!put it in a lightweight car with decent shafts! And you have a serious rear end
