Yes it will require the gearbox out - a lot of work I know but if needs must .......
Unless you know for certain the state of the clutch plate I would check that too while in the same area.

Thank you Mike. I'm not very hands on so work will need to be done by my garage. I think that will involve having the gearbox out? Is that the case please? I'm hoping I can defer the work until the winter (though I drive my TVR all year).

Turned out to be a loose bracket! Feeling mightily relieved, if not a bit daft for not checking the simple stuff first. 2 New bolts and all is fixed.
