LT77 "oil"

Post by JC. »

Currently part way thought an MGB GT V8 conversion

I have a good used LT77 waiting to go in.
Im guessing I aught to change the oil?
What ever is in there is going to come out when I try to fit the mechanical speedo drive so I might just as well change it out.

I *think* I need "Castrol SMX 75w/85"?

Am I going to be able to get this from halfrauds or do I need to order it from somewhere tommorow morning?
If I can't get the castrol stuff can I just use a generic ATF for the meantime?

How do you know when its got enough oil in it? Is it the same as the B box? fill it up till it comes out the filler hole on the side?
Is there a drain? I can't remember ... i havent seen my gearbox for months. :/

Do I need to drain it or can i just top it off with ATF?

TIA

There has been a lot of discussion on this site about LT 77 oil, I personally use Redline MTL (not the heavy shock oil). There is a large drain plug on one side and a filler plug on the other. Fill the box until it dribbles out of the filler hole. (Around 2.3 litres I think).

Regards,

Pete
