Whining 4 speed

Post by marcjagman »

Got the chance of a cheap P6 V8 4sp manual box, all works fine except on down change, it whines quite a bit, seems okay under load, is it fixable at a resonable cost? possible causes anyone? Thanks in advance.

They are a very weak box, and even reasonably spirited use will strip the teeth off the laygear which has not been available new for about 25 years, and secondhand ones are generally showing lots of signs of wear as well.
They also have problems with jumping out of reverse but most times that can be cured with s/h gears and careful setting up. Gaskets and seals are available for around £30, but a full set of bearings will set you back about £200.
Problems with the 3-2 downshift can be the rear flange loose which can be the retaining stud snapped off the mainshaft.

I'd say so. The normal course of action in the original car is replacement with an LT77.
