Clutch advice

Post by texpis »

Hi all
I have a land rover 90 which had a 3.5 V8 on a lt 85 gearbox and now has a 4.2. I do a bit of off roading so it does get a bit of ragging on steep slopes etc. The clutch and flywheel are off the 3.5,
The problem I am having is the last few times out the clutch has been smelling quite bad and today it started to slip. Left to cool down and drove home fine.
Looking at clutches I see there is clutch for 3.5 and 3.9/4.2 just wondered what the difference is and will a 4.2 clutch fit my 3.5 fly wheel?

Thanks Mick

Rover 3500 SD1 cars had a 9.5" clutch and later larger engines had a 10.5" clutch. The Later flywheel is thicker and heavier and will only accept a 10.5" clutch and earlier flywheels will only accept a 9.5" clutch.

You need to establish which flywheel you are using at the moment.

Specifically it's a Range Rover flywheel and clutch you need.

Do you think it will suffice or is it it a it borderline. Problem with range rover flywheels are like hens teeth most of them were auto boxes

I had my 9,5 flywheel re drilled to accept the 10,5 plate.
The flywheel itself has the same dimensions.

The flywheels are all the same diameter but the type that accept a 10.5" clutch are thicker and heavier.
If you are using an SD1 type bellhousing, you need to check that you have sufficient space for the release bearing etc.
If you have the 4x4 type bellhousing (Much longer) then you should be ok.

Cheers guys I have gone for a Kevlar stage 2 clutch it's okay 90% of the time but raging it up a muddy hill seems to get it smelling. Thanks for the advice if this doesn't work I'll have to sort the flywheel.

I have a new and unused one which I'm not using. It will take a bit of time to get to it though.
