Re: 4ha reliant scimitar axle

If you do decide you need a different ratio set then I have plenty of 4HU (Jag) gear pairs available in just about all the ratios from 2.88 to 4.55 which will fit your axle. I rebuild the IRS diffs for the Cobra fraternity (and own a Scimitar coincidentally).

different sumps seem to have different capacities. And need a matching dipstick Don't believe that is strictly true. Sump capacity is only relevant to how much oil you can get in before you reach the level it needs to be at relative to crank (web throw). That is the level that is measured using the...

No, standard Rover cranks are cast iron.

And nothing wrong with the crank in the pictures that a light clean won't fix.

Think you need to look at your 60ft times first. A 1/10 or two off that will get you into the 11's without the need for more power. Bigger / better rubber might be a better investment than a nitrous kit.

The BL manual does show it being a taper bearing. - AND - it obviously has to take at least some thrust in both sideways directions. - AND - The front wheel bearings are a pair of taper bearings, and they come apart if you remove the hub. But easier to understand how they work. If it is a single ta...

So this presumably means all RV8s (and all pushrod engines) had this running in procedure carried out at the factory? I can absolutely guarantee that no engine out of the factory had any kind of run in procedure at all and were also all started without any kind of oil pump priming or 'special assem...

More likely a typo by the person who submitted the registration documents, or a miss-read by the local registration office of the submitted request documents I would think. They would have been 'manual' back then.

Hi There thanks for replying, what I was wondering is, can I use "all" the parts from the 38A RR, i.e. engine auto box and Transfer box, plus the axles, will it all fit? I can get someone else to sort out the electrics (hopefully) NO, the 38A axles won't easily fit a Defender chassis - they are com...

Plenty of factory built 4.0 Discovery's. Crank to thrust bearing interface is identical to 4.6.

Not an issue.

No problem. If you had better fuel in Oz you could've had the high comp engine LOL. I spent some time in Parramatta back in the late 90's working on some service issues at LR Australia HQ on D2 and 38A Range Rovers.

From a file of list of engine numbers hidden in the background of my laptop (dated April 2002).

55D 4.0 Litre Tempest Low Compression
56D 4.0 Litre Tempest High Compression

Tempest is LR internal name for Disco 2. Low comp in these terms is 8.13:1

Compression ratio on a factory engine is determined by the pistons - what part number are they? How deep is the piston bowl? You can 'visually' tell the difference between HC and LC pistons.

If it's a UK engine though it is highly likely to be 9.35:1

The volume of the sump doesn't really matter does it? if you have a matching dipstick and dipstick tube then that measures oil height below the crank - that is the same what ever the volume of your sump? Some sumps (NAS etc) are bigger to give more oil due to thermal requirements or longer service l...

The latest tech poly V belts on ancillary drives on mainstream cars are 'elastic/stretch' and run without tensioners of any kind. Whether there is one of an appropriate length for your need is a different question. Stretch belt kits come with a small pressed metal device that allows the belt to moun...
