Re: TVR 5-litre engine balance

He probably means that he needs the pulley and flywheel (and clutch cover) to do the balancing. These can be non weighted Rover items. Real steel did mine and needed everything including pistons rods etc even big end shells.

Re: TVR 5-litre engine balance

My TVR 5.0 was externally balanced and had a bespoke weighted front pulley and weighted flywheel. I wanted to use an unweighted standard Rover pulley and flywheel so I had it internally balanced and had some heavy metal added to the counterweights. I mainly had it rebalanced as I was fitting forged ...

Re: T56 to RV8 conversion.

I took the propshaft to Bailey Morris for balancing and they found that the new t56 yoke was manufactured 60 thou off centre and 20 thou loose on the joint and therefore couldn't be balanced. They are not wrong. Checked it myself and the circlip grooves are machined off centre. The yoke was bought f...

Pretty sure it's 7/16" UNF
7/16" unf is the size of the thread on the very similar cylinder used on Defenders etc.
Genuine SD1 cylinders have an M12 thread.

Re: Trying to set timing!

Hi Sidecar, I totally agree that the factory/Lucas distributors are frequently inaccurate and likely to have +/- 2 degree error when new. The reason I chipped in on this post was to clarify whether the OP was intending to use full manifold vacuum or timed port vacuum. I believe timed port vacuum is ...

Re: Trying to set timing!

How have you worked out that the mechanical advance is giving 26 degrees? Based on what I have seen in various Rover Distributors. The 3.5 distributors tend to have 26 degrees mechanical advance giving 36 all in based on 10 degrees at idle. The 3.9 distributors have less mechanical advance giving a...

Re: Trying to set timing!

Hi Sidecar, So what I will do this weekend is, disconnect the vac hose and measure what the timing is at 4000 rpm. I'll get back with the results asap. It will be interesting to see what advance you will get at 4000rpm. With the vacuum disconnected I would expect 28 degrees given 2 degrees at idle ...

i.e. its not connected to a 'timed' port.
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the vacuum can on a flapper distributor normally uses a timed port.

Re: T56 to RV8 conversion.

We have swapped in an electronic speedo (Autometer) which is driven by a Sat Nav box. No good in tunnels lol.

BUT, now that the T56 is installed, we could drive the speedo from the sender on the T56 which is how things are with the T56 in my Hotrod.

Prices have zoomed. I paid £1800 for a new T56 about 2 years ago.

Re: My V8 Sierra project ..... maybe I will finish this one !

Great work Mark. Keep it up. A question. Way back in your post you showed your first attempt at the gearbox mount. (The steel one). In the photo there is a black item attached to the gearbox, driver side. What is it? Just aside, I'm amazed at the way Sierra parts prices heve zoomed up recently. Prob...

Re: T56 to RV8 conversion.

For the reverse lock out we just used a push button attached to the gear lever inside the gaitor to momentarily operate the solenoid. Looking for a nice push button gear knob at the moment. I'm very envious of the quality of the work in your project. It's brilliant. At 72 years I have to get a move ...

Re: T56 to RV8 conversion.

Job done. Engine and t56 in place and working fine. The shortened prop seems ok but we will get it balanced just to be sure.

Re: T56 to RV8 conversion.

Engine and T56 now going back in and a few hours left now to get everything back on it. Roll on Monday. We previously modified the clutch to hydraulic operation so a slave cylinder has been grafted onto the gearbox to push the clutch arm forwards. IMG_4666.JP...

Re: Oil pump flow rate

Will the proposed turbos be water cooled ? If so there will be a certain amount of heat exchanged between oil and coolant. I Use water cooled turbos in my car which has a very compact under bonnet space and keeping coolant temp down is the main battle where as the oil temp is acceptable using a smal...
