Re: 4.6 RV8 rough power and trq estimate
Bottom end is absolutely std 4.6 stuff, block has been skimmed earlier to bring pistons closer to TDC. At the time when I assembled the engine 4.0 pistons with smaller cc dish were not that easy to buy. (I did eventually buy a set but they are still stashed somewhere). I have steel gaskets that are ...

Re: 4.6 RV8 rough power and trq estimate
I used to have a healthy 3,5 litre with ported heads, uprated cam or two and SU´s. At its peak it made 190 hp. I then ditched the SU carbs and manifold and went to Edelbrock Performer and Holley 390. That increased the power to 221 hp. The next step was to replace the short motor with 4,6 stuff. Res...

Re: Rover V8 oil gallery detail
No threads on the plug nor in the block. Just for fun, I pulled the same plugs on another 4.6 block as well and it has the same sleeves fitted.

Re: Rover V8 oil gallery detail
Doubt it because there is only the solid plug upstream of this sleeve.

Rover V8 oil gallery detail
I removed the oil gallery plugs to properly clean the block. It was a bit messy and needed a thorough scrub. Anyway, I noticed an interesting detail underneath the two plugs at the front of the block in the lifter gallery. Underneath the plugs there are two brass sleeves, sort of restrictors. The th...

Re: Very noisy top end
Yes it is. Only components changed are the block, crank, rods and pistons.

Re: Very noisy top end
Stevie, both banks and front to back.
Dave, yes it varies.
JSF55, only one set of shims. I don´t like stacking them.
No more progress this weekend as I had better things to do. I have basically given up and waiting for an inspiration to pull the engine.

Re: Very noisy top end
Okay, had some quality time with the engine. I replaced the Crane lifters with Comp Cams lifters. Cleaned them, dipped them in oil, installed them and primed them without valve train fitted. Oil through all of them. Fitted the pushrods and rockers. Big surprise ! No change... still rattles. I'd say ...

Re: Very noisy top end
Stevie, I have removed all lifters from LH bank and took each of them apart. All very hard to press down, had to do that it a big bench vise. Oil oozed very slowly out. I pressed them down just enough to get the circlip out. All eight lifters had oil in them. Whether they were full, hard to say. Jud...

Re: Very noisy top end

Re: Very noisy top end
This block has no signs of ever being run, std size, new cam bearings. The cam was actually a bit "tight" on bearings when fitted, needed some rotating to set in. Based on serial number, it is a Morgan 3,9 block. It has P38 type main bearing caps that had been drilled/tapped for cross bolts. AFAIK t...

Re: Very noisy top end
How can a perfectly working set get faulty by themselves ? Remember, I had the same head, cam and lifters of the old engine and they worked perfectly in November. Block, pistons and rods are the only thing changed, everything else came from the old engine. And a new set of lifters be faulty straight...

Re: Very noisy top end
Not boldly at all, a fairly logical suggestion :D But, unfortunately no help. I do have shims and have tried both with and without. No change. Yesterday I changed oil and filter. I had 10W-40 for break-in (which obviously has been somewhat limited :( ) and put 20W-50 in. The only change is that now ...

Re: Very noisy top end
Yes, all lifters indeed. Oil pressure is around 45 psi at idle. Mechanical gauge. I will do some more checking tonight when I get back home.

Re: Very noisy top end
I don't why it is noisy. Preloads are within spec, 2 sets of lifters are behaving the same. It not isolated lifters, it is all of them. When I put the engine together I did not notice anything funny. At the moment I suspect that there is something wrong with the top end oil pressure. Here is a link ...
