The oil filter looks like it's quite low down on the engine, same with the oil pump. I can't see how the oil would ever drain out of these? I can see if I have a loose pick up the pump would such air...very strange. I think it's time to get the sump off (hopefully I can do this with the engine in th...

I filled the filter. It was running fine with the new filter, probably drove about 5 miles before decided to fix the carbs. That's the strange thing. My previous engine could stand for about 6 months and still bring the oil light off on cranking! I have the geared starter motor as well so it spins q...

Oil system "lost" prime

Just fitted a new (which I repair kitted) pair of carbs and the car wouldn't start (oil light wouldn't extinguish on the starter). Whipping off the rocker cover seems to revel that no oil is arriving at the top on cranking. I've never had a car loose it's oil prime before. It did fit a new oil filte...

I've just bought a set from fast lane, yet to arrive, the spec. looks very similar to Magencor but 1/2 the price, and made in the UK! In theory the spiral wound core leads should last longer than the carbon ones. I think there is hopefully better build quality on the more expensive wires, and they s...

I'll take some more photographs and some measurements. The valves do look like they are set further back in the seats for some reason.

"X" heads

Guys, We got my spare heads I was given with the car off the shelf and noticed that they were different! One has a X stamped after the part number and has a noticeably larger volume, the valves are closer together with less land in-between! The the same SD1 size inlet and exhaust valves are in both ...

Re: bmw v8 swap

any info on swapping 4lt v8 from 540 e34 into 316 compact e36.thinking bout doing this for winter project.engine mounts crossmember clearances etc thanks. :) Think there's a major problem with sump clearance with R&P steering/cross members. The E39 6 has R&P steering - the V-8 a steering box. IIRC,...

ChrisJC wrote:Ah yes, but you could do a similar calculation on BHP, and work out that an RV8 is twice the power of a bike engine, so two bike silencers should be OK....?

Chris.
But I think the bike uses two as well?

that's a small displacement for a V8 which has to still overcome all the friction of 8 pistons, at higher revs! Would love to see one! Presumably you would have to go solid lifters to get the rpm increase...?

Bikes do rev to above 2x the rpm of the V8. How big is the bike engine? Probably flow wise they might be about the same volume of gas per second?

Happy to send a cheque for a prototype! Quite fancy it for the next MOT, will make the garage boys chuckle! I like the irony in the punch line on the back for us "larger" males :-)
