They have 54cc combustion chambers. I welded my chambers up behind the spark plug apertures and milled 082 thou off the faces to get the combustion chambers down to 37cc so I could run a decent compression ratio on the 4.6. Fitted 1.75in inlets and 1.5in exhausts with extensive porting and flowbench...

Des Hammill's book has a whole chapter or more on this very issue and how to rectify it. Rover never got it sorted properly. Top hat liners provide the solution provided they're properly fitted.

Unscrew and clean the stepper motor. Also clean the throttle butterfly and plenum air intake area. Check throttle sensor and AFM are functioning properly.

I suppose you've tried swapping the step up springs around in the carb? Seems though this may be more ignition related. I run an early Lucas SD1 dissy (Opus) with a modified advance curve and Lumenition coupled to an MSD 6A amp and Blaster 2 coil. Even with a cam and big valve heads it idles smooth ...

It's a fairly straight forward swap. If you are using the timing cover, oil pump, dissy off the 3.5 you will need to fit a spacer to take up the extra crank length. These are available from most RV8 specialists. The 3.5 oil pump needs to be in good condition.
