3.9 New Build - Carb Issues

Hi, Although I did a top-end rebuild 8 years ago on the original 10.5:1 3.5 in my '73 P6B, the rest of the engine has been getting pretty tired since. Top-end work at that time ended up with '89 Range Rover heads, 3.9EFi cam, JP timing set, K&N's. Still on twin HIF6...set up and dyno at Peter Burges...

Hi Garry, The big gear in your pic has the same slot drive as the smaller gear and is from an oil pump upgrade kit, which (with a spacer plate) is used to convert a P6 front cover to accept the taller gears - like mine:- http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2084/28788753.th.png When you say you can't get ...

Success!

Found an outfit on the net that services EGA's. Very helpful guy's found a 196 manual that he's posting to me gratis.

Hi Tom, Wouldn't worry about the missus thing...they always think blokes are up to something suspicious anyway! If you pop a rocker cover off, you'll see the head casting number: http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5954/50771265.th.jpg Then you can look it up on the link above. Also, you say there's no...

Exhaust Gas Analyser

Picked up a Servitron 196 analyser cheap recently. http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/2017/99659487.th.jpg Seems to be working OK, anyone know where I could get a manual for it? Google throws up an outfit called Analize ( ) as the agents but no phone number and not answering emails. Stan

Many thanks Pete, I've just rebuilt the top-end and there's a few more jobs to do before it's back on the road (isn't there always? :) ) When it is, I'll try it with and without the vac and see how it feels. The vac unit starts at 5 and ends at 17 in Hg, and yields 8 deg advance. I've heard Eddy's g...

Some strobe guns have an adjuster on them so that they always show the timing marks at TDC by the use of a inbuilt delay system. I can not stand doing the timing this way so I have set my adjuster knob to zero and taped it up! Pete Hi Pete, Is this a personal thing? Or do you reckon errors can cree...

Had a scout round at work. Got a couple of socket head countersunks, 5/16" UNC x 3/4" long overall if you want them?

I'd be wary of running an M8 tap down them. Standard M8 coarse is 1.25mm pitch = .049". 5/16"-18 comes out at .056". Stig Fasteners (for instance) have UNC Countersunk in Phillips & Socket head in various lengths, e.g. 1"... 5/16" UNC x 1" C/S Phillips 5/16" UNC x 1" C/S Socket Also this guy seems t...

Nipped to the local LR dealer at lunch and got an OE gasket for the princely sum of 56p. Which mics up at 12 thou...twice that of the one in the upgrade kit! So that clearance becomes 6 to 10 thou..or more likely 3 to 7 with the gasket compressed. Spacer plate licked up on the surface grinder, and t...

Thanks ged, Yeah...4 to 5 thou end float sounds a bit more like it to me. I've fitted the taller gears upgrade kit and the they stand proud by about .004". The gasket in the kit's .006" and when I bolt up on this I can barely turn the gear shaft. Thicker gasket then...or grind a few thou off the gea...
