101s use a capillary temperature gauge, not electrical.

I cleaned the ally spout with a small brass brush to make sure it was clean and dry. Cheers for the suggestions. I have cleaned the ally spout, and roughened it slightly. i then tightened the hose clip with a socket, rather than a screwdriver, and theres been no leak so far, but i've only ran it a ...

I got a new pipe, but its still leaking coolant. The end of the pipe that attaches to the water pump keeps sliding off, no matter how hard the hose-clip has been tightened. Is this likely to be because of a low quality pipe (its quite thin compared to the old one), low quality hose-clips, or could i...

Re: 101 exhausts

where do they crack? Mine had a verticle crack on the engine side ~half way along. I didn't see it until i had the engine stripped for a rebuild. Apparantly they tend to crack because when Land Rover produced them they didn't let them weather for any length of time before they were machined flat. A...

101 exhausts may well be the way forward. will have to check engine/subframe an might have a bid on they! cheers. 101 exhaust manifolds have a nasty habit of cracking, so i'd check first to make sure they haven't. Also the right hand (IIRC) manifolds are getting very rare these days and can go for ...

cheers for the pic.
I've ordered a pipe that'll hopefully fit.
Is it possible to change the pipe without draining the whole cooling system? If i just drained the 2 block drain taps, would that be enough?

yes. they seem to give ERC2320, but i'm not sure from their diagram if its the right piece. The picture of ERC2320 from the LRdirect website doesn't look as if its right though.

water hose part number

I’ve put an inlet manifold with SUs from a Defender in my landrover 101 v8. The S-shaped pipe that runs from the front of the manifold to the back of the waterpump is leaking and I need to replace it (possibly called the thermostat bypass hose?). It’s a different length to the 101 pipe, and I was wo...

They've been changes to SUs in mine. hopefully that makes it easier.

the replacement fuel pump is one for the series III Stage I v8, so i don't think there'd be too much pressue. would there?

The fuel does spill over with the ignition on without cranking too.
Is it a big job to fix stuck floats?

There is the odd time when it will fire up and run seemingly ok for 10 mins. Could it be the float sticking intermittently?

carbed Rover v8 not running well.

I have a 3.5L Rover v8 in a landrover, that is playing up. As you'll be able to tell, I'm a complete novice, so feel free to give seemingly obvious answers. The last couple of times I've tried to start it, it starts the first time, and runs quite roughly for a couple of minutes, no matter what the c...

Thanks for the info. I'm told the gauge came from a Jaguar XJS v12. Its to go on an old Landrover 3.5L v8. the needle does only move with the gauge wired up one way, so the polarity does seem to matter. The engine is playing up at the minute, so I haven't been able to run it long enough to see if th...

temperature gauge wiring

I've got hold of a Smiths coolant temperature gauge and was wondering if anyone knew which way round to wire it in. There's a female connector (marked 1) and a male connector (marked 2) on the back. Which attaches to the voltage stabiliser (or is it likely to have an inbuilt one?) and which goes to ...

Cheers for the replies.
I've never heard of the 18 gauge either, although the picture I've been sent of the sender looks similar to what it should look like.
I'll probably try it and return it if it doesn't fit.

temperature sender threads

I've just rebuilt my landrover v8 and was wondering what the threads were for the oil and water temperature sender units. I was thinking of using some 'universal' gauges if the senders fit. I've been told that the univesal ones are 18 gauge. Is this the same as the Rover 3.5L v8 manifold? Thanks for...
