Re: Lucas 14CUX on a 4.6 ?

Thanks for that. I had got it into my head that I would have to buy new 4.6 pistons, but a little research suggests that the 4.0 ones will be OK with a little jiggery-pokery like maybe using SD1 heads with composite gaskets. Of course I realise that you can read as many forum posts and magazines as ...

Re: Lucas 14CUX on a 4.6 ?

I should add that the 4.6 crank/rods came in a block that is known to have a bad liner - presumably the usual block cracking issue.
I really don't have the funds or inclination to go for a "top hat" conversion

Re: Lucas 14CUX on a 4.6 ?

Why did you need to bore out the 4.0 - as a 4.0 and 4.6 have the same bore. I didn't I just happened to be lucky enough to pick up a factory reconditioned block for a very good price. New pistons and rings too - but they're 4.0 type - and one of the new pistons has been cracked due to very poor sto...

Lucas 14CUX on a 4.6 ?

I've now collected enough bits to build a 4.6 engine. I've got a LR reconditioned 4.0 block which has been rebored, and now I've aquired a good 4.6 crank and rods. At present it's got the late type timing chest for the coil pack type ignition, but my thoughts are fitting an intermeadiate type timing...

Cylinder bores and crank journals :- rust removal ?

I've just aquired the bottom end of an early 3.9 Efi engine. The engine was stripped and chucked into boxes for reasons which so far remain unknown. But by the looks of things the pistons/rods were stored somewhere relatively dry. The block and crank were by the looks of it stored somewhere on the d...

Re: 14 bolt heads on a 10 bolt block ?

Now I've got to thinking about which type of head gaskets to use, early or late ?
Does it matter ?
More research required on my part I think

14 bolt heads on a 10 bolt block ?

I've not had a chance to look at this yet as my spare (SD1) heads are burried in my loft somewhere  But basically I've got a 4.0 bottom end with 10 bolt head fixings. Do I need to buy matching 10 bolt heads ? Or is it possible to use the earlier 14 bolt type and just omit the other four bolts ?

Possibly the dumbest V8 question ever ?

I keep reading about slipped liners on the 94mm bore engines. The cause apparently is too thin block casting cracking behind the liner, allowing the coolant to creep up into the combustion chamber. Eventual effect is the liner starts to move, eventually becoming loose. Head gasket integrity is lost....

Re: What have I got here ?

I'm sorry to say that due to my own fault, I do not have a photo hosting service to post photos from. In cases of desperation I've been known to text msg photos to peoples mobile phones. Yes the bearing caps are cross bolted. TBH I've not looked closely at the crank yet, it's come with a box of shel...

What have I got here ?

I've recently aquired a V8 short motor that seems (by the distinguishing features I can see) to be a late "serpentine belt" engine. It's arrived totally dismantled with the crank/pistons/rods in a box, so while I know that the bore is 94mm, I haven't be able to accurately measure up the crank stroke...

Hi My user name is the military registration of my 1963 ex MOD Land Rover. I'm not really into military vehicles, but this one came along as a basket case for the right price. Now as it's already been chopped and changed all over the place, restoring it back to its original former glory neither inte...
