Similar approach to Perry,

I was able to borrow a cutter and face off the crossbolt boss by 5mm so that once the bolt was also shortened I did not need to grind it's head.

If all the gears apart from fifth engage without problem then I doubt it is a selector problem. Does it engage when the engine is off and the car is stationary? Probably a fault like the fifth gear has come off the layshaft, drain the oil and if metal comes out then you need to remove the gearbox to...

Your ticking could be a rocker.

The steel cup in the end of the alloy rockers have been known to come loose, Rover had some production issues occasionally.

Is the reinforcing plate the same size as the spacer?
Is the spacer about 25mm thick?
Both for an automatic from memory.

Non of my manual flywheels needed any spacer on the end of the crank and all have offset bolt holes so they only fit in one position.

What tyres and were they at correct temperature and pressure? It's actually amazing how much drain they can take just to get them to rotate Ian And unlike on the road there are two contact patches on the rollers for each tyre which increases the power loss. If you take it to extreme you could even ...

Alloy welding is probably more of an option than a similar repair on an iron block but if there is a crack externally then what chance of other defects in the block casting?

Is the crack between the forward or aft pair?

Normal advice for the gap seems to be about 1/32 inch or less but the important thing is not to close the gap between the nut and body completely so that you do not over strain the thread.

Now it's been driven check the propshaft bolts are tight. If they are then try turning the connection 180 degrees in case the bolt holes are out for some reason.

Also the LT77 mount bobbins are notoriously soft, have you fitted the bolt and snubber bush underneath between them?

I've used the stainless shim type gaskets for years and found them good. In fact I've used the same set for years and never found a need to replace them !!

Rover part number is ERR6733, usually on Ebay and available from the predictable sources.

Might try some RTV sealant this time instead of cork gasket.. after i make sure sump is flat. How thick is the cork gasket ? I had a non original one that was about 4 mm thick that just squirted straight out of the joint when I tightened the sump bolts. Proper gasket is only about 1.5 mm thick. als...

I appreciate I'm arriving late here but if you are after Chrome bumper ride height then fit a chrome bumper front crossmember. The rubber bumper crossmember with lowering springs will give horrible geometry. Also most rubber bumper cars still have the chrome bumper rear spring shackle mounts 'hidden...

The HS6 carburettor accepts a fixed needle where as the BAF and BBW are swinging needles which require a spring and seat for fitment into the piston. Are those needles also available in a fixed format? If you fit swinging needles into a piston designed for a fixed needle, then the engine will never...

In my experience changing the springs is usually a mistake. You say it does not pick up very well, what do you actually mean? Does it stutter when you apply throttle at low revs? does it pause once its accelerating? Get it diagnosed properly and find out if it pauses because of under or over fueling...
