engine tuning - london area
Hi All, I’m not sure if this is the right areas to post this, but I was hoping that someone might be able to recommend someone or somewhere who could recommend a place in SW London preferably for ‘old school’ engine/carb tuning. The engine is a 3.5V8 old RRC engine on Stromberg’s. I’m really keen to...

I decided to replace both needle sets as i wasn't convinced by them as they has a slightly chamfered shoulder, and all others I have seen reference to have a square shoulder. there were also sitting proud of the piston, which i assume was the reason i had such rich readings. Anyhow - the adjusting s...

With Stromergs, the jet shoulders should be aligned as a starting point. The carbs then balance for flow, and any mixture adjustment carried out equally to both. You aim for the best idle speed, but no weaker. This does assume the carbs are within spec as regards wear, etc. i think my problem lies ...

Rover V8 - CD175 Stromberg’s running rich.
Having just rebuilt the old rover V8, I took it down to the MOT and she passed everything else, but failed on the emissions – the CO2 reading should have been under 3.5%, but the reading mine came out with was 7.5%. I took the tops of each carb and cleaned the dampers out and took the needles out an...

Timing all set today with the strobe and have run her for 20 minutes getting upto working temperature. I found that 4degrees btdc was optimum. A few cooling hose clips needed tightening, but other than that, she looks and Sounds lovely, ready for the road test! :P just to close this thread now - Eng...

So with running in and breaking in the cam, my understanding is this: 1.get engine running 2.set timing with strobe adjusting carbs tuning and get engine running smoothly. 3.run engine at 2000rpm for 4-5 minutes and check for leaks etc. 3.run in engine at 2000rpm for 20 minutes to break in the cam. ...

Update! I have good and bad news... Good news is that I've found the cause of all my problems. I had originally accidentally fitted the camshaft sproket back to front and the "mark" that I had thought was the pointer, and therefore had lined up with the crank gear, was something else!!. I remember wh...

... So where do you go from there?.... I should think that even with just a basic knowledge of cam timing you should be able to get the cam timed in to a tooth without a cam wheel. Stock cams inlet all shut between 70 and 77 degrees After Bottom Dead Centre so should be that difficult. With that in...

Thanks for all of your suggestions - it seems that i have been lucky with this. On Saturday i will set about removing the timing cover and recheck all the crank/camshaft timing, then re-assemble. I think that I can remove the timing cover without having to drop the sump!. There has been no damage to...
You only need the valves to hit by a few thou to cause damage & this is probably the reason they weren't seated. I would say you were lucky the lifters weren't pumped up properly.
Thanks Ged - well I certainly hope so! - it does seem the likely cause - but really just reassurance.
