Turned out to be a loose bracket! Feeling mightily relieved, if not a bit daft for not checking the simple stuff first. 2 New bolts and all is fixed.

Thank you Mike. I'm not very hands on so work will need to be done by my garage. I think that will involve having the gearbox out? Is that the case please? I'm hoping I can defer the work until the winter (though I drive my TVR all year).

Hello gents.
I know that this is an old post but what was the solution please? I have a Griff 400 with similar symptoms but without the new parts having been fitted.
Current wisdom on Pistonheads TVR forum suggests a layshaft or release bearing fault.
