Thanks ratwing, I think you are right. Like you I'm pretty convinced that the fire rings are sealed as there is no coolant in the oil and vice versa. Mine being an 14 bolt 3.5, I've come to the conclusion that the extra 4 bolts on the outer edge did in fact seal the gasket on the outer edge (but of ...

Thanks for the replies - good points! The torque wrench was brand new (this time) but was the issue last time. It is a Clarkes ratchet type but didn't come with a calibration certificate. I think I'm going to try some sealant in the valley and change the wrench, then get it calibrated. If this doesn...

Oil leak from head gasket

I'm getting a thin film of oil running down the outside of both sides of my 3.5 block, from beneath the heads between 3-5 & 4-6 cylinders. I'm using composite gaskets, with 10 x ARP studs only, holding down SD1 heads . The heads were skimmed & gaskets were coated with copper gasket sealant (as this ...

After thinking some more about this, I don't think I installed the stretch bolts correctly and probably only tightened them to 70ft lbs as per the manual, rather than the correct half turn that puts stretch/tension on (you live & learn!) So I spent yesterday afternoon on the web, doing some more res...

Although my torque wrench is old I've always (without fail) wound it back to zero after use. Will get it checked out first, before I shell out on a new one. Thanks for all you posts and comments. Definately be checking the heads and decks again - both have been skimmed! Who sells Elring gaskets. Tro...

Thanks for the reply JP.

Excellent point about the torque wrench. Mines a few years old now - time to invest in a new one!

Definitely going to invest in ARP studs, despite the cost.

The old chestnut of HGF....

Finally got round to getting underneath the engine to try and see where the coolant and oil leak was coming from. Up until then I believed it was coming out of the rear seal and or back of block. I was surprised and disappointed to see it coming from the head gasket on both sides, particularly since...

Thanks guys.

I'll check the gear change linkage shaft. Stands a good chance it could be coming from there.

LT77 leaking oil

Hi. My rebuilt LT77 is leaking significant amounts of oil, after around 600 miles from install. I'd assumed it was the rear seal but getting underneath today, it clear it not coming from there but further forward and higher up. Could it be the top breather? Are there any other places to check? - the...

Hi Chris & Mike. Not had the death squeak (remember that from years ago) and hoping that some oil was getting around via the pressure relief valve. Top end wasn't getting a lot hence noisy tappets but cam was already bedded in as not new rebuild and hence not tight. Chris - I'm guessing that there w...

Have I done much damage?

Discovered a major error in my rebuild over the weekend😞 and concerned over what level of damage I may have done? Stupidly did not check the connections from the oil pump remote take off and connected them the wrong way round. Obviously with a one valve in the filter oil was not flowing corr...

Thanks Devonman.

I wont pretend that I understand how they work but I'll make sure I get the maximum angle I can achieve.

Brake servo mounting angle

I've just purchased a Powertune clone of the Lockheed remote servo to install in the project. But the manual states it must be mounted at between 25 & 45 degree angle (front uppermost). It appears they are sensitive to the mounting angle but does anyone know why? Need to mount mine at 10 to15 degree...

Rover 3.5 V8 alternator bracket fitting help required

Hi. Ive just bought a alternator bracket off e-bay which id supposed to mount the alternator on the opposite side of the block to original position. The part is a Land Rover part number ETC 5576 but I cannot work out how it can be fitted. I offered it up thinking it would be apparent from the bolt h...
