I worked on the carbs this weekend...blew them out with compressed air, but made no difference. Still overflowed after. Took them apart and there was no dirt in there. Checked the float height and they were both fine. Changed out the needle & seats to the old ones which were in it. Setup float heigh...

Thanks for the replies folks... I will try blowing out the carbs to see if I can dislodge any dirt. The petrol was getting low in the tank, but the tank is new enough and I've ran out lots of times before without getting dirt in the carbs. One thing that doesnt make sense for me about dirt....should...

Rover V8 Twin SU's overflowing petrol
Re-built both my SU's (SD1 Hif6) on my rover v8. New seals, jets, needle valves & seats & o-rings. Car fired up fine after re-installing. I balanced the two carbs with airflow meter so I think thats fine. I also adjusted the screw for setting richness on each of the carbs. I'm told that if its setup...

Problem fixed!!!
Hot starting problem is fixed. The Ballast Resistor on the car had been wired wrongly. The by-pass pin was connected to a constant voltage supply instead of just while cranking. The pin which should have a constant supply was not getting any voltage. After re-wiring, fires first time every time, hot...

Exhaust fitted
In the end I decided to go with the two Cherry Bomb middle boxes and ditched the two back boxes I had. The back boxes are replaced with straight pipes. Worked out very well :D (in my opinion anyway)!! Gives that V8 rumble now with a nice murmur at idle. Not overly loud at regular driving, but roars ...

The car been doing this for as long as I've had it. The problem didn't just switch on after changing something. I will try raising the back of the bonnet to help let hot air out and see if it makes a difference. The fuel pump is Facet Solid State (square shaped) pump. I dont have the model number to...

Thanks for the suggestions.. The idea about the starter motor not working well may also be something to do with it. If the car is hot and it wont start, I can put a set of jump-leads onto a running car and it will fire almost straight away. You can hear the engine turning over quicker with the jumpl...

My fuel pump is located in the back of the car. It is low down, under the fuel tank so it is in the lowest position. I have it so it comes on before I start cranking over the engine, so it is pumping before the engine is trying to start. What you say about the carb re-filling etc makes sense, so I d...

Thanks for the suggestions... The more I think about it, the more I think it could be vaporisation. What cold, the electronic fuel pump runs at a certain speed and I can hear it change after a few seconds as the pressure builds up. When trying to start it when its hot, the pump races a lot quicker (...

Fuel Return line
I have a rover V8 3.5 (twin SU cards) engine which is being fed with a Facet fuel pump. However, it doesn't have any return line for the fuel and I cant see any obvious place on the carbs where it looks like there should be one  . Should there be a fuel return line on the standard twin SU's wh...

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of Cherry bombs...Is the car not very loud though with just one cherry bomb each side, or do you also have a middle box? Are they back or middle boxes? Those boxes look very small to kill off much sound? Dont want to be heard for miles around, unless really can...

Best exhaust backbox for 3.5 V8 ?
Hi, I'm looking for some advice as to what type of backbox to use on my Mk1 Escort with a Rover 3.5 V8 (Twin SU carbs) engine :D . I have a handmade tubular exhaust manifold which run into a 2" pipes straight to the backbox. This is the same for both sides (seperate and not linked). I'm looking for ...

SD1 Thermostat
Hi, Can anyone tell me the correct temperature thermostat which should be used on the SD1 (3.5 V8 Twin SU Carbs)? I thought it should be one which opens at 82 degrees, but when I took my old one out, it had 78 degrees stamped on it. Which is the correct one and would using the wrong one cause proble...

Thanks JW, I tried to find info on that standard coil but haven't come across wheather it's 6V or 12V and the Haynes manual doesnt say.. The Ballast switch might be the problem.... Is it internal to the silver 'ballast resistor' box pictured here? http://www.v-8.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=578 . Th...
