Re: Edelbrock carbs, lean bog when running on the transition slots. (Throttle position just off idle)
Yes I did get it to work very well in the end, making the air bleeds smaller should have richened up the idle and transition circuits but it did not seem to work so in the end I drilled the pilot jets/tubes, the amount escapes me at the moment. I also drilled the the accelerator circuit that is on t...

Totally agree, I would trust a word they say, in fact no matter what your problem is the RPI will recommend their ignition amplifier to fix it, including excessive camshaft end float!

Re: Can I pass 1990 emissions in UK with a carb?
I've worked on loads of Eddy 4 barrel carbs, you can reduce the effect of them going rich when braking or cornering hard by making sure that the carb is mounted level, many manifolds tip the carb forward and that can make it spill fuel into the primary venturies when braking, fit a wedge plate if re...

Re: How much Power.............
I've got 300BHP out of a NA 4.6,(I've built several that make 300 BHP). Its not cheap and you need a decent ignition system none, of the standard Lucas ones work well above 5k RPM. (They just weren't built for it). Like others have said you need a good cam, inlet manifold and exhaust but you really ...

Re: Quick question about distributors on RV8
Locking a standard dizzy up will require a bit of 'thinking', I used my MIG welder but there would be other ways to do it, Basically with the engine running with its least advance you will want the trailing edge of the rotor arm to be just about in line with the trailing edge of the HT post that is ...

Re: New build engine smoke after 30 seconds, anyone?
Have you run it at 2000 rpm for a while to help bed in the rings? Ian running at 2000 RPM will bed the cam in but it won't bed the rings in. You need gas pressure behind the rings to bed them in and the only way you can do that it by putting the engine under load for short periods of time. In fact ...

Re: Britpart Rover inlet manifold gasket - fit dry or with sealant?
I always a small amount of sealant on both sides of the gasket, silicone sealant isn't fuel proof so make sure you use a proper gasket sealant that is fuel proof! Also check that the valley gasket clamps at either end of the engine do not foul up on the underside of the manifold, they should be Ok o...

Re: Calculating compression ratio - have I got this right?
Your method of timing up the engine seems OK to me. SU carbs are not my thing so I don't know if the vac system is in operation at idle. After many experiments on my engine I have found that it needs a lot of ignition advance at idle, from memory it is around 32 degrees. My vac system makes up about...

Re: Calculating compression ratio - have I got this right?
It sounds to me like you have done all the right things, some people just throw a motor together without measuring anything which is fine if everything is standard but it is not fine in my humble when things are not standard. Your issue is not the CR but unfortunately I don't know what the cause of ...

Re: Calculating compression ratio - have I got this right?
When you 'buretted' the piston did you put it on TDC then stick a plate of Perspex over the cylinder then fill the space with paraffin or something like that? (if so you normally have to seal the piston to the bore with vasoline) With regards to the head volume from memory were something like 26.5cc...

Re: Calculating compression ratio - have I got this right?
There is no way that the issue is because the CR is too high, if you lower the CR then you will just loose performance and still not fix the issue. I think that it will either be a carb (mixture) issue or an ignition timing issue. You could consider fitting an exhaust gas analyizer such as an Innova...

Re: Calculating compression ratio - have I got this right?
Cheers for the replies guys, something must be wrong then. I'll check everything again today. If the cam timing was a tooth out, could this cause pinking (or hotter running which I put down to the retarded ignition timing)? Not sure about that but I guess if the cam timing was out it wouldn't help!...

Re: Calculating compression ratio - have I got this right?
I've just done the maths using your figures and I get 9.7:1. I run 10:1 in my 4.6 and any engine that I build I tend to go for 10:1, I have no issues with detonation on normal unleaded so something is amiss with your setup!
I run a similar set of timing figures to MinorV8.

Re: Normal or Super Petrol????
It is possible to get quite a clean burn with the 500 carb but you need a means of monitoring the exhaust gas AND big collection of rods and jets.
Your current setup is around 7% leaner than the base setup on cruise and more or less stock on the acceleration circuit.

Re: New build engine smoke after 30 seconds, anyone?
It sounds to me like the valve guide seals need looking at. The very early engines did not even have any seals on the exhaust, the later engines had 'umbrella' seals and these were pretty useless.
