When you say 'disconnected the stepper motor' do you mean the electrical connection? or the air feed pipe? It does sound as though you have either an ECU flagged fault (could be a sensor reading out of range) or the stepper is not working properly. I think Ian is right .. reset the ECU first .. then...

Just a note from the previous comments about timing and detonation. The instructions given to adjust the timing until you get the maximum possible just before it 'pinks' is a little dangerous IMHO. There are a number of things that will cause detonation in an engine but the points of primary concern...

Certainly sounds like the dissy to me. If it is a dlm8 the I would say the amplifier pack has had enough .. they usually have display failure at temperature, or could even be the coil breaking down as it gets hot. Torque settings
I have always used 70ft/lb for the main bolts, all of them, it has always been fine. The ARP bolts are I believe advised slightly higher but unless it is on main studs I have never found a need.

If it's on an intermediate front cover .. have you considered something like Megajolt ... wasted spark is so much better than a dissy .. and if you use GEMS coil packs they bolt straight onto the 4.0 Inlet manifold. To be honest the last couple that I have done have worked out to cost about the same...

Have you drilled out many sparkplugs, LOL, Not an easy job, grind off the rolled lip the holds the ceramic in position then try and punch out the ceramic from the plug. I am obviously biased towards the Rover V8 .. but I have to say that 300BHP normally aspirated would be a pretty wild 4.0. The best results I have ever managed were 275BHP to keep it driveable .. sure if you want to go for a really wild cam and make all the power at the top end of the rev range .. b...
