If you have discounted everything else I would be checking the bores for ovality. If the crankcase pressure is low, the rings are gapped right, and the stem seals are all good then that is all that is left. Andrew ETA A silly thin oil could also contribute May be... but it was okay before the re-ho...

It could be oil from the crankcase getting in via the inlet. Have you inspected that route for excess oilyness? Chris. It depends where you are really. Turners, JE Engineersing (not John eales as he has no real kit - all farmed out), David Knight although a few freinds of mine have not had great work from that workshop - not to be negative as I have never used his services - but a few freinds were not very impresse...

the gap was on top limit... but that said, people run a lose engine .001 thou over and they don't use oil?....
why would the gap cause it to use more?.. its the rings that stop it going north?

Has anyone ever look in their cylinders with a bore scope? I’ve been complaining about oil usage since my re-build winter before last.. Well I took it out (5 mins of a job :) ) and its now running at 45 / 50 PSI according to the gauge at full chat?... does not drop much for tick over but it is a cold night out there so probably didn't get the oil hot in my 5 mile spin.... it's quite a weak spring but obviously does make a differance...

Think Ill take it out.. see what it does... TBH its a small spring inside the std big one.. so probably does not do a lot???

Hi Mike.. I was the builder... but I left the pump valve set up as it was before the re-build with a helper spring in there..... The oilways are fine and it ran 2500 miles last year like this.... I would have thought pressure and flow go hand in hand... you will get better flow at a higher pressure ...

Interesting. I wonder how helper springs work? They obviously just bring up the lower RPM pressure and not the final blow off pressure?

I re-built my engine last year and I'm still running on 20-50 valvoline mineral to bed in. Obviously with new bearings etc it's a tad tighter but also I had V8D fit a helper spring to the oil pump before the re-build to give it a boost... So on the gauge its running at around 45 at tickover up to 60...

yes.. he has them made special for the Ali blocks... so they go close to full depth.... they are also cheaper than ARP and very good quality ;) only down side is they didn't have any Allen-Key hole in the end (although he did say the next batch would have it)... so I put a slit in the end of mine be...
